Hour of Code
We live in a world surrounded by technology. And we know that whatever field our students choose to go into as adults, their ability to succeed will increasingly depend on understanding how technology works.
But only a tiny fraction of us are learning how technology works. Fewer than half of all schools teach computer science.
That’s why our entire school is joining in on the largest learning event in history: The Hour of Code, during Computer Science Education Week (December 5-11). More than 100 million students worldwide have already tried an Hour of Code.
Our Hour of Code is making a statement that Applewood P.S. is ready to teach these foundational 21st century skills.
See http://hourofcode.com/ca for details, and help spread the word!
We are excited to announce that all of the hours you spend on the Hour of Code website, during the week of Dec.5-11/16, will be counted in our school's hours of participation. At school, your teachers will keep track of your hours. If you spend time at home, on the activities, please have your parents send in a note telling us how many minutes you spent coding. We will then total up all of our students' time, and enter a contest with other DSBN schools. Have fun!
Parent Lending Library
We have a good selection of books for parents to borrow. Topics include mental health, ADHD, Anxiety, Learning disabilities and more. Come in to our Learning Commons and sign some books out (on the shelf right inside the door) or email Mrs. Vince and let her know what topic you are interested in.
Silver Birch Book Club:
We are planning to participate in the DSBN Silver Birch Conference again this year. Follow these links to the Ontario Library Association to see the selection of Fiction and Non-Fiction books nominated this year - Fiction titles, Non Fiction titles.
Scholastic Book Fair
Thank you to everyone who supported our Book Fair this Fall and helped us reach our goal. We were able to purchase a selection of new books for our library and some items for our new Makerspace. What is a Makerspace? Follow this link to find out more.
We have had some enthusiastic grade 6 students getting our Makerspace ready and we are happy to announce that Monday and Thursday morning breaks (10:30-11:05), students will be able to drop in and create something. Beginning Dec. 5, students in grades 1-3 may attend on Monday mornings and students in grades 4-6 may attend on Thursday mornings. Our theme for December is crafting with the holiday spirit in mind.
